Sweet Sorghum Blog from Iberia on August 6, 2008

new iberia plot of sweet sorghum

The three sweet sorghum varieties being evaluated are relatively close in maturity. The varieties from left to right are M81E, Topper and Theis. Maturity ranges from 120 to 130 days, so harvest date for the test at Jeanerette should occur during the latter part of August. Normally, sweet sorghum is harvested for syrup production when the seed are in the hard dough stage. With our objective of maximizing total fermentable sugar in the juice, the timing of harvest is still being investigated.
